Lip Augmentation

Treatment time is typically 45 minutes to 1 hour, including consultation and topical numbing.

Whether you are looking for a soft, natural enhancement or a more noticeable transformation, lip filler can be customized to your unique features and goals.

What Are Fillers?

We use hyaluronic acid (HA)-based fillers for lip augmentation. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the body and is responsible for helping retain moisture, softness, and volume in the skin. Because HA is naturally occurring, allergic reactions are uncommon.

The fillers used for the lips are also reversible. If needed, the product can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

Which Filler Is Right for Me?

During your consultation, we will discuss your lip shape, anatomy, and desired outcome to determine which filler is best suited for you.

How Long Do Results Last?

Results vary from person to person, but most HA lip fillers last approximately 6 to 9 months. Longevity depends on factors such as metabolism, lifestyle, and the type of filler used.

Are There Risks?

As with any injectable treatment, there are potential risks associated with dermal fillers. For that reason, it is important to seek treatment from a qualified, licensed medical professional with advanced training and a thorough understanding of facial anatomy.

At Essence, patient safety is a top priority, and we remain committed to ongoing education and advanced aesthetic training.

Downtime

Most clients experience swelling, tenderness, and mild bruising after treatment. Swelling is usually most noticeable during the first 24 to 48 hours, with residual swelling possible for up to 2 weeks.

How to Reduce the Risk of Bruising

To help minimize bruising and swelling, we recommend the following before treatment:

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for 1 to 2 weeks prior to treatment, unless they are medically necessary or prescribed by your physician.

  • Common blood-thinning agents include aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin, vitamin E, fish oil, krill oil, flaxseed oil, omega-3s, ginkgo, ginseng, garlic, glucosamine, St. John’s Wort, and some multivitamins.

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before your appointment.

  • Fresh pineapple may be helpful in the days leading up to treatment, as bromelain may help reduce bruising.

  • Some clients also choose to take Arnica Montana prior to treatment.

Aftercare

Please follow these post-treatment instructions carefully:

  • Contact your nurse immediately if you experience severe swelling, increasing pain, blanching, redness, itching, or discharge from the treated area. You may also contact your PCP if needed.

  • Apply a cool pack as needed for comfort. Do not place ice directly on the skin, and limit use to 5 minutes at a time.

  • Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours unless specifically instructed to do so.

  • After lip filler, minimize excessive mouth movement, including heavy chewing and other oral activity, for the first 24 hours.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that increase blood flow for at least 12 to 24 hours.

  • Avoid facial massage, vigorous exfoliation, and aggressive skin treatments in the area for 72 hours.

  • Lips and surrounding skin may feel dry or tight afterward. You may use Vaseline or a gentle moisturizer as needed.

  • Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated for the first 24 to 48 hours to help reduce swelling.

  • Mild bruising is normal and may be covered with makeup once appropriate.

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after treatment.

  • Avoid flying for 24 hours after treatment.

  • Final results should be assessed after 2 weeks, once swelling has fully settled. If additional filler is desired, it is often best to wait until that time.
